Pacific Hydro Limited is Australia's leading renewable energy company, producing non-polluting electricity from wind and water. Pacific Hydro embarked on its first international development signing a joint venture agreement with Aboitiz Equity Ventures for a 70MW hydro project on the Bakun River in the Philippines. The US$150 million development remains the largest infrastructure project ever built in the Philippines by an Australian company. Whilst the site was perfect for a “run of river” hydro project with steep and abundant annual rainfall, it was problematic from a communications stand point. The remote site location, adverse weather and the inherent risks in a large construction project of this type required stable and reliable communications. Having unsuccessfully tried other providers Imaginet were approached by Pacific Hydro Limited to resolve their RC&C problems at the Bakun Hydro Project. Remote Access - Imaginet installed an integrated VSAT, LAN and wireless system giving the Bakun site local, national and international VOIP, Email, VPN and remote communications access. This allowed Pacific Hydro regional office in Manila and headquarters in Australia the ability to consult, using voice and real-time video links, with its personnel on site during the construction and operation of the facility. The on site network is a combination of both wireless and fiber systems, allowing for communication between the power station at the lower section of the facility and the weir facility 9.5km up the mountain side. Remote Control - Imaginet integrated a system of online cameras giving 24 hours a day remote viewing and monitoring of key activities during construction, maintenance and operations greatly enhancing worker and site safety. Using a server based VPN Pacific Hydro, its maintenance personnel and its consultants worldwide can control plant systems to ensure optimal and safe operation. Redundancy is built into the system through VSAT and Internet multiple carriers. This ensures access to the site at all times.
